Los Tones + Black Springs + Smoke & Silver

So there I am chilling at Town Hall, waiting to see old mate Kurt Vile smash out some tunes when the conversation with my gig-buddy turned to hipsters and the matter of their dancing. She (a hipster) was surprised at the number of dumb vintage wearing hipsters at a recent musical recital who couldn’t dance to 60’s music. Nobody could even do the twist! I disagreed with her premise (myself also being a hipster) and didn’t pay this much attention because hipsters don’t care about things that don’t directly concern them and also because I was under the belief that hipsters didn’t dance. The hypothesis turned from ‘hipsters can’t dance’ to the question ‘do hipsters dance?’

So tonight (24th Jan 2014), I’m taking her down to The Standard to see what hipsters do to 60’s music when it’s performed as it was in the 60’s before DJ’s became the fetish that they are today. The all star lineup of modern garage psychedelics includes the entirely groovy and danceable tunes of Los Tones, whose band typeface reminds me of Jackrabbit Slims and whose music reminds me of when I was a cowboy with a starburst fender jag that shot rainbows riding a horse down Norton St in Leichhardt. Yeah, that was a dream I had once, but this was definitely the music that was playing.

Not only will it be a night of awesome music, it will also be a test as to whether hipsters dance when confronted with cool, underground, vintage music you can dance to. Of course, it isn’t dance music, because that stuff is made to be danced to. This is applied sociology right here. Hipsterology 101, as it were.

Los Tones will be supported by Black Springs, a band that have lent their galactic Deerhunter jangle to Day Ravies and last weekend’s Velvet Cave at which I can confirm that they stole the night from the headliners, who might have been just a little too edgy. Also in support are Smoke and Silver, whose roots are firmly in radio alternative rock, but don’t hold this against them. They’re an interesting mix of psychedelic blues and overproduced rock music that should reproduce well live – especially at The Standard.

Located above Lo-Fi and also above a tiny restaurant (or is that lo-fi? I can never figure it out), The Standard has played home to a million awesome locals and internationals over the last year, boasting plenty of space and a super professional audio system with attentive staff on the mixers. Beers aint expensive either, clocking in at a reasonable $7.00 for a local on tap and a large selection of cocktails. Tix are $10 from moshtix or on the door.
