If you live in Sydney, thrive on fresh local dance music or simply have an active SoundCloud account for hunting down the next big thing, chances are you’ve heard of Personal Best RecordsObseen.

Obseen

If you often find yourself trawling the depths of SoundCloud for dope remixes and flirtatious beats then Obseen is a name you’ll be familiar with. If not, this is your chance.

The 21 year old James Guido has been slow burning over the past year whilst carefully crafting a debut EP that dropped in December 2015, along with a string of straight fire remixes including Calvin HarrisHow Deep Is Your Love?, Zara Larsson x MNEK’s Never Forget You, and Cashmere Cat’s Ice Rink. Now the producer is ready to kick into overdrive this year, recently releasing a flip of a Triple J Unearthed favourite.

Obseen’s latest work, a remix of Sammi Constantine’s Call You Mine, sits pretty within Australia’s vibrant future bass landscape – a somewhat broad category that leans itself towards layers of space-age samples paired with incredibly smooth vocals. The remix holds its own against other similar beat makers, with waves of luscious synths transforming Constantine’s ethereal original into a shimmering dance track. Delicate nuances of piano are sprinkled all throughout the track, adding a softer touch to contrast the brooding, almost industrial bass towards the end.

Aside from flipping tracks, Obseen’s talents lie in original jersey club-style productions as seen on his debut Not The Only One EP. The title track of the same name boasts rounds of high pitched singing paired with Guido’s own slightly distorted pipes, accompanied by futuristic synths and intricate rhythms. Not The Only One, along with other songs like Meeting Bliss, Freedom and Forget Your Pride, align themselves closely to that addictive bouncy club music so many of us just can’t help but go crazy for.

The hype around Obseen’s tracks and distinctive sound can only be put down to expert production and a unique taste differing from traditional club anthems. Glimpses of the producer’s upbringing in blues, rock and jazz music can be heard throughout both the EP and range of remixes available, highlighting his modern approach to making beats.

As for future plans, we can expect another killer remix coming our way soon – this time of DJ/producer/warehouse-party-thrower Alison Wonderland. Any upcoming shows are yet to be confirmed but one thing’s for sure, you’ll be seeing a lot of Obseen throughout 2016.
