Listen to St. Vincent completely nail a stripped back cover of a punk classic

St Vincent london calling

Yesterday, St. Vincent was a guest on Annie Mac’s BBC1 radio show where she played a selection of acoustic tracks from her new album, MASSEDUCATION.

She also took the chance to take on a cover of The Clash’s 1979 punk classic London Calling completely stripped back. And she totally nailed it.

Listen to St. Vincent nail a completely stripped back cover of The Clash’s London Calling live on the BBC.

A track as sonically iconic and lyrically momentous as London Calling isn’t exactly easy to cover, especially when performed on an acoustic guitar. But St. Vincent is no ordinary musician. The vicious lyrics take on a new weight and clarity, and a closer focus on melodic dynamics give her cover a bit of a Patti Smith vibe.

During the interview she also performed New YorkLos Ageless, and Pills from MASSEDUCATION.

Listen to the show below. The cover starts around the 18:20 mark.
