Ever have one of those days where you just want to get home, slump onto the couch and not move for a good couple of hours? Whether it be a shitty day at work, spending way too many hours in the library at uni or you’ve just been up since an ungodly hour in the morning, don’t fret, there is a remedy.

Dreamy beat maker Wafia is here with her luscious EP XXIX, which twists and turns between laid back, dreamy rhythms, and a deep, bouncy tempo. So, when you start to feel that afternoon exhaustion setting in, kick back with this five track offering, which is sure to take the edge off in the most elegant way possible.

Wafia debut EP

With some heartbreaking vocals backed up by some ridiculously smooth R&B inspired beats, Wafia hits a homer with her debut.

For a debut EP, Wafia has absolutely hit the nail on the head, and has honed in on a futuristic sound. There are elements of hip-hop, electronica, futuristic-pop, even a few soul influences thrown into the mix. The vocals that appear throughout XXIX are flawless and softly glide over the accompanying instrumentation.

From the get go, the EP swirls into a cosmos of spacious beats, before quickly jumping into the deeper and heavier beats of track number two, The Raid. There is so much contrast packed into the EP that it is near impossible to tire of each track. Even while writing this, XXIX has easily been on repeat for over an hour, but with each play, new sounds and elements shine through, making it such an interesting and thought-provoking release. One listen may provide a gentle and calm feel, while the next listen, a plethora of differing sounds take command, offering more of an upbeat and energetic listen.

There is almost a sense of darkness that is weaved into this album of electro beats, that comes through in the underlying emotion of the passion filled vocals. Lyrics like “You have made your decision to put me in my place, and the lies you’ve been hiding have taken up your space, tell me why does my heart burn this way when I see your face” that feature on the track Heartburn give a sense of unparalleled yearning.

An album that took two years to complete, it is obvious to any listener that this was not just a spur of the minute decision. The flawless production mimics the patience and effort that has gone into the release, and credits the immense talent and devotion Wafia holds to her craft.
