Lanks – Rises and Falls

The aptly named Rises and Falls is a track that does just that, soaring high above the evocative electronic soundscapes with layered vocals, depicting a narrative that draws you in with its intricate storytelling and melody.

lanks

This is the debut single from Lanks, the solo electronic project of Melbourne musician, Will Cuming. Drawing inspiration from Radiohead, The xx and Bon Iver, Lanks is a stark contrast to Cuming’s seven-piece indie pop band Farrow. Combining spoken narratives, electronic beats and unusual percussion, Lanks constructs a unique platform for cinematic storytelling against a backdrop of electronic production.

Cuming expresses screenplay-like narration through his warm, earthy vocals. Song progression resembles song title, as the track mirrors the ebb and flow of a surging tide. The water rises and falls, he croons throughout. A plethora of instruments – synthesisers, guitars and flutes – and samples are innovatively used to develop a captivating sound with suspense, simplicity and depth. With Rises and Falls, Lanks has created a hypnotic three minutes, expertly layering his husky vocals with electronic elements and instrumentation.

The integration of acoustic and electronic is a rare and pleasant concoction, something we can be sure to expect from Lanks’ upcoming debut EP, out in 2014.
