It’s taken 1.5 years, but someone has gathered all the dead-pan camera stares from The Office and put them into an interactive website

If anyone was super productive for the passed 1.5 years, it was definitely Joe Sabia. In this time he collected every instance from The Office US of characters breaking the fourth wall and sorted them into different emotions.

The Office stare machine is a library of over 700 clips covering over 800 different emotions. With the help of Aaron Rasmussen, they have created an algorithm where you can enter any of the 800 emotions into the machine to receive an Office character staring right back at you.

Well worth the wait, someone has blessed the internet with The Office Stare Machine – a compilation of all the best dead pans by your favourite Office characters. Can you cop all 706?

According to the website, the stare machine has a more serious meaning.

“This was inspired by facial emotion research breakthroughs. This project seeks to explore the many nuances of visual expression through the beloved familiarity of our favorite office-dwelling TV icons. Consider this an intricate psychology test.”

Sabia has gone even further and tallied which emotion was expressed the most by each character.

“John Krasinski (aka Jim Halpbert aka Big Tuna) had the most SAD expressions.

Rainn Wilson (aka Dwight Schrute) had the most DEVIOUS expressions.

Jenna Fischer (aka Pam Beesly-Halpert) had the most WORRIED expressions.

Steve Carell (aka Michael Scott) had the most HAPPY expressions.”

The Office began in the UK in 2001, then was successfully adapted to a US version in 2013. Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephan Merchant, the mockumentary sitcom is renowned for its characters breaking the fourth wall by dead panning directly into the camera.

What if anyone has the stamina to endure all 706 stares? “you get a secret, epic, and beautifully crafted surprise video.”
