Riding in on a wave of tightly coiled bass lines, Terrible Truths are yet another effortlessly cool edition to Australia’s growing post-punk scene. With elements distinctly reminiscent of 1970’s rock and a serious injection of pop-fueled energy, this is a band which is breathin fresh air into an otherwise dated sound.
Sharp rhythms, coiling bass lines and sweet yet punchy vocals are the unforgettable trademarks of Terrible Truths. We tell no lie, these guys are going places!
The lady-led trio comprises of Rani Rose on guitar and sweet vocals, Stacey Wilson on bass and equally sweet backing vocals, and Joe Alexander’s drumming. Since the band’s conception in 2010, tracks have been few and far between thus leaving fans continuously wanting more. False Hope is the most recent release, and possibly the first taste of what we can expect to hear from Terrible Truths’ debut album!
Appearing on the fifth birthday compilation of their label, Bedroom Suck Records, False Hope is a high energy number characterised by the outfit’s signature wiry guitar rhythms and half-singing-, half-shouting vocals. This is one track that really packs a punch in only two minutes, with an unwavering vigour comparable to UK punk. Listening to Terrible Truths would be exhausting if it wasn’t simultaneously so exhilarating.
Other past releases, such as Don Juan and No Wind, No Waves have plenty to offer up to the round table that is Australia’s emerging artists. With sharp, constant snare patterns and a deep wavering bass line, the band often jeers towards a mild surf rock. Don Juan is a real standout track which takes a more relaxed approach and features an incredible round of crossover vocals from Rose and Wilson.
Terrible Truths currently divides their time between Melbourne and Brisbane, playing shows across the east coast. With such a distinct sound and rave reviews flying all over social media, it’s safe to say we can expect big things from these guys… No pressure or anything.
Terrible Truths are playing the Tote Hotel in Melbourne this Friday, supporting The Ocean Party for their album launch. Their spontaneous singles Don Juan and No Wind, No Waves, amongst other EP’s and splits, can be found on the trio’s bandcamp page.
