In 2016 vinyl proved the comeback was real with the best sales in 25 years

Vinyl had a big 2016 in the UK. Sales reached three million – double that of the previous year, marking the highest number of sales since 1991.

The remarkably high number of sales was lead by David Bowie, whose latest and final album, Blackstarwas the highest selling vinyl record of the year.

Vinyl accumulated a groundbreaking amount of sales in 2016 in the UK, with five deceased artists making it into the top ten.

David Bowie’s Blackstar was released in January 2016 just days before the musician’s passing. His unexpected death left the world in mourning, especially in the UK where he was a national icon.

According to Official Charts, while Blackstar reigns as the most sold vinyl of 2016, other Bowie albums made the Top 40: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust (13), Hunky Dory (16), Nothing Has Changed – The Very Best Of (17), and Changesonebowie (28).

Incredibly, also in the UK in 2016, more money was spent on buying vinyl than digital albums.

Here are the top 10 biggest selling vinyl records of 2016:
