Gear up for one hell of an Australia Day at these 5 gigs

The next week is going to be a pretty epic run of gigs and good times, with different events running from Friday night all the way until next Tuesday. Oh, if only Monday was a public holiday too…Regardless, there are parties aplenty every night leading into and including Australia Day, so pace yourselves, kids. Here are some of the best gigs happening around the country this weekend, pulled from Happy’s gig guide.

Donny benet live

From our very own magazine launch to the (better) local Sydney version of Big Day Out, there are heaps of huge gigs to go to this weekend. Here are 5 of the best.

Happy Mag issue # 1 launch party – The Union Hotel, Sydney, Friday, 22nd January

It’s finally here! We’ve been working our arses off over the past few months to get our print edition off the ground, and issue #1 is a ripper. Head here to get a copy or come down to the launch party at the Union Hotel in Newtown, with booze from Young Henry’s and tunes from the one and only Donny Benet, new wave guitar heroes Big White, funk fusion gods Bin Juice and the enigmatic dark horse Wells.

Bad Day Out – Petersham Bowling Club, Sydney, Saturday 23rd January

Bad Day Out is an institution. Big Day Out may have bitten the dust but not the good folk who make Petersham Bowlo their home every year for one hell of a party. This year will see The Laurels, Polish Club, Big White, Angie, Deafcult and Australia among many others sharing the stage. It’s gonna be a blinder!

Bad//Dreems, Polish Club, Flowertruck and ADKOB – Vic On The Park, Sydney, Sunday 24th January 2016

Sorry but Sydney is killing it this week on the gig front. The Inner West is fast becoming the home of live music in the city, and this weekend only proves that it’s where you need to go to see good gigs. Just around the corner from Petersham Bowlo is the Vic which will host Bad//Dreems, Polish Club, Flowertruck and ADKOB on the sun drenched outdoor stage. Let’s hope it doesn’t piss down all weekend…

Cloud Control and Courtney Barnett – The Palais Theatre, Melbourne, Friday 22nd January 2016

If you can’t make it to our mag launch because of, well, distance, you should probably make your way to see Cloud Control and Courtney Barnett at the Palais and cry tears of joy / jealousy.

The Pinheads – Sol Bar, Maroochydore, Friday 22nd January 2016

We’ve been a big fan of The Pinheads since they tore their way into the scene with I Wanna Be a Girl. They put on an absolutely psychotic live show, so bring a spare shirt, try not to break a bone and have a ball. Support comes from Wash.
