Artists normally stick to their guns you know? For example Disclosure create dance floor worthy anthems and Kanye likes to make sure his lyrics are potent. Melbourne-based producer Pikachunes is known for his upbeat, left of field dark synth-pop with a spectacular bubblegum sheen. So when he released an up-tempo re-work of Pat Benetar’s Love is a Battlefield with Sydney gal AViVA on vocals we were pretty psyched to listen to his five minute piece.

Pikachunes

Pat Benetar’s classic anthem Love is a Battlefield gets the Pickachunes touch with a little help from Sydney’s AViVA. The 80s nostalgia is real.

Pikachunes’ real moniker is Miles McDougall, though he is known as the smooth Miles G Loveless as well. Though his homeland is the land of the long white cloud he’s been calling Melbourne home for a little while now, quickly establishing himself as a new force in the local synth-pop scene. He has been making music since 2010 when he released his self-titled LP that year. His deep voice reverberates throughout every song he puts out. Pikachunes is recognised for his retro like beats such as his banger Nervous from his first LP. (If you check out his Soundcloud there are two remixes of the track by Wundercastle and TDA, both funky.)

His cover of Love is a Battlefield could be a reflective tribute to recent troubled times or it could just be a banger turned into another banger – we don’t know everything. The lovely lady providing the vocals is indie-pop Sydney local AViVA who is influenced by the likes of Lana Del Rey and The Smiths. Her voice on this song is angelic and can definitely be related to the likes of Purity Ring lead singer Megan James. This is a song you’d definitely pair with a couple of cold ones and a dip in a pool.

The gentle strums of the guitar throughout the chorus add that seaside touch transporting us to a tropical island we all wish we’d rather be on. Given that Pikachunes has a knack for creating 80’s era beats, it’s no surprise he’s chosen an 80’s hit to cover. It’s different to the original in all the right ways – he’s turned an anthem for millions into a chilled out track focusing on that iconic chorus “We are young, heartache to heartache we stand/no promises no demands / love is a battlefield.”

This track is refreshingly different for Pikachunes and it shows another side he may have been hiding from us. After this we wait with baited breath for the release of his new album in 2016.
