First Aid Kit

They have been continuously described as a Swedish indie folk duo. Folk, however, probably wouldn’’t be my word of choice when talking of First Aid Kit.

Its definitely more country vibes I get from these two, however its all done very gracefully which is to be expected I suppose with influences like Fleet Foxes and Joanna Newsom. First Aid Kit have a very Angus & Julia Stone feeling in their delicacy, but they contrast it with all the catchiness of a Taylor Swift hit (don’t be hating now).

First Aid Kit are two Swedish sisters who play folk and look like they’ve stepped out of 1972. And good lord they speak good English.

Sisters Johanna and Kiara Söderberg hail from suburban Sweden. Although composing throughout 2007 and hanging out in their dad’s lil home studio, they only took off in 2008 after their cover of Fleet Foxes’ ‘Tiger Mountain Pleasant Song’ made them Youtube sensations (forgive the terrible cliche). Their debut track was played on their native Swedish radio in the summer of 2007 before their debut EP ‘Drunken Trees’ was released in April 2008. Their first full length album, ‘The Big Black & Blue’ was released in 2010, soon followed by a personal recording request from Jack White and then a second album, ‘The Lion’s Roar’ in 2012. Not a bad resume they’’re whipping up for themselves.

2014 has so far seen the release of their first album on the major American record label Columbia, titled ‘Stay Gold’. Their lead track from ‘Stay Gold’, ‘My Silver Lining’ has been making appearances here and there on Australia radio via triple j. Who can say if it has much to do with the status of First Aid Kit’s sold out shows in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as the mother of all major Australian festivals, Splendour in the Grass in Byron at the end of July. The duo’s Australian trip will be wedged between taking on the UK and Europe for their summer festival season, before touring throughout the US. Jesus Christ.
