Father John Misty continues internet shenanigans, removes ‘Generic Pop Songs’ from Soundcloud

If you’re looking for a constant source of entertainment for the next few months, you should be following Father John Misty’s internet movements with a keen eye.

Seldom has a day gone by that there hasn’t been news of his shenanigans – whether it’s a bizarrely hilarious unboxing video for his forthcoming record or tweeting that Happy Mag’s articles bore him to sleep (still waiting for an apology) – and when there has all you need to do is hit up his Twitter account for constant feed of absurdity.

Father John Misty continues internet shenanigans, removes ‘Generic Pop Songs’ from Soundcloud with no explanation.

His latest stunt was posting three tracks to SoundCloud, each titled Generic Pop Song with different numbers proceeding. Each track was a satirical interpretation of garden variety pop tropes, sung, played and produced by Misty himself.

Now the tracks have disappeared without a trace and with no word from Misty as to why.

As Pitchfork points out, back in 2015, he pulled a similar move, uploading covers of Ryan Adams’ 1989 covers before taking them down. In an elaborate note, he wrote that he removed the songs because Lou Reed appeared in a dream and told him, “Delete those tracks, don’t summon the dead, I am not your plaything. The collection of souls is an expensive pastime.”

We’re now eagerly waiting for a similar explanation.
