In the tail-end of 2016, Elton John, his longstanding co-songwriter Bernie Taupin and Youtube teamed up for a music video contest. Creatives all around the world were tasked with producing their own clips for three classic tracks from the British superstar; Tiny DancerRocket Man and Bennie and the Jets.

Recently at the Cannes Film Festival and coinciding with John and Taupin’s 50th anniversary of working together, the three winners were revealed.

Three classic 1970s hits from Sir Elton John have been gifted music videos, crowdsourced from the collective creative consciousness of Youtube.

John himself said he was “moved and amazed” with the results of the competition. “The future of creativity is clearly collaborative, fusing art and technology, and it’s been fantastic to open up our work to the next generation of creative talent and to share that process with the world on YouTube,” he said.

Check out all three winning clips below.

Rocket Man

“In his own interpretation of Elton’s iconic hit, Iranian filmmaker and refugee Majid Adin reimagines Rocket Man to tell a whole new story of adventure, loneliness and hope.”

Tiny Dancer

“Building on Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s Californian inspiration, Max Weiland filmed a video for Tiny Dancer that reflects on life in Los Angeles from a dozen different people, all unfolding behind the wheel of their cars.”

Bennie and the Jets

“Jack Whiteley and Laura Brownhill tell the formation story of Bennie and the Jets with their futuristic video of Elton’s hit song, which features breathtaking choreography and striking sci-fi fashion.”
