East

She’s just a young artist who wants to share her music with the world. So many of these little babies seem to be popping outta Australia and New Zealand recently, and they’re doing us proud! Equipped with a fiercely soulful exuberance that is contrasted with a wise-beyond-her-years maturity, East is a unique and promising talent.

With her first track released just over a month ago, East is taking the music scene by storm with Old Age. (Not actual old age, she’s a 16-year-old schoolgirl). Her voice is a little rough around the edges, delivering electropop hooks with a steady, slightly transatlantic drawl. The prominent British sound quality will surprise you when you learn that the super-talented songstress actually hails from Central Coast, NSW.

east artistHow do they keep doing it? This generation of late ’90s born kids who are emerging out of nowhere, fully formed, exploding with talent. Case in point: East.

Old Age opens with a playful and lively intro, percolating with an expectant energy. The day-brightening electronic tune plods along with a beat that you’d find in a Chvrches or Charli XCX song and a lyrical intelligence and fearlessness that conveys a maturity that is few and far between among your average teens. “I’m a young blood, with an old heart; and eyes that see more than they should,” she sings, demonstrating a richness and wisdom well beyond the indie pop newcomer’s years. Old Age is a catchy and often baffling track that manages to be both insightful and blithe, a skilful art that East has already managed to nail.

Despite the limited information about the Central Coast popsmith, it’s pretty clear that listeners can’t wait to hear more of the teenage singer’s lush pop music that weaves tales of self-knowledge, teen angst and coming of age. It’s not much to go by, but with a debut single like Old Age, East just might be one of Australia’s next breakthrough artists.
