As temperatures in Sydney reach sizzling heights, swelter into the universe of Cosmic Flanders.
The four-piece from “cloey” and “newie” debuted a self-titled EP late last year that deserves hella recognition. Their luscious debut EP has established themselves as underdogs in Sydney’s psychedelic rock scene, and we couldn’t be more keen for what these fellas are cooking.
One effective way to combat the record breaking heat this Summer is to drench yourself in the refreshing ambience of Cosmic Flanders.
Track one, Weekend at Bunnings, is a perfect introduction to the record. A simple, yet memorable ballad, which, if you focus on deeply, conjures a facade of red and green and the smell of BBQ’d sausages and onions.
The third track, Stoner Loner, has a Libertines-esque vibe (only better) with a beautifully panned opening guitar riff. It’s followed by four minutes of instrumental opulence in Francine’s Dream.

Like their music, the band’s own name evokes wandering imagery – broad spaces filled with exotic colours and sounds. But, to the psych rockers, “cosmic” and “flanders” have a less indicative, and more cryptic meaning.
“We loved the name Cosmic Flanders because, little known fact, it’s actually spelt the same backwards as it is forwards!” they say.
We’re still trying to figure it out.
It’s no doubt that Sydney’s music scene is thriving with great music at the moment. Gigs are on almost every corner all week long showcasing the city’s diverse local talent. Cosmic Flanders have been playing the usual spots, from Brighton Up Bar to Oxford Art Factory. They also enjoy listening to their good mates as well as playing alongside them.
“At the moment we’ve all been listening to our good friends Wartt Gunn who we’ve also played with a couple of times! We also love playing with our good buddies Mac the Knife and BALKO.”
Cosmic Flanders can only get bigger and better. On what’s in stall for 2017, they say “we’ve got something in the works for later on this year so keep your ears peeled and your eyes open!”
