Comedians or artists? Hank Schmidt in der Beek and Fabian Schubert are turning Plein Air painting on its head, then laughing at it

Hank Schmidt in der Beek and Fabian Schubert are cheeky bastards. Their new collaborative series, which combines photography and with Plein-Air painting, is turning the latter on its head – then laughing at it.

Comedians or artists? Painter Hank Schmidt in der Beek and photographerFabian Schubert are turning Plein Air painting on its head – then laughing at it.

The duo’s new book, titled und im sommer tu ich malen – translation: And in the summer, I paint – is a collection of photos shot by Schubert that capture in der Beek alongside his original paintings.

The shots are taken in various outdoors spaces around the world where some of most highly regarded Plein Air painters created their best work, including Cezanne, Monet and Van Gogh. Only in der Beek’s paintings are unlike those of such monolithic artists. He doesn’t bother with the beautiful landscapes around him. No, he only paints what he is wearing.

The series is undeniably clever its cheeky simplicity – a complete piss-take on high art by two very talented artists. The photos themselves are excellent, as are in der Beek’s (which are a little reminiscenty of Sean Scully), but it’s the concept that drives the series home. Pure comic genius.

Have a look at some of the collection below. You can find the book here.
