Cerebral Ballzy

I couldn’t help but envision the ‘straight to the cerebral palsy’ scene of Wolf of Wall Street (you know the one, hilar’!) with this Brooklyn quintet’s punny band name; Cerebral Ballzy. We all love a good pun, let’s admit it, they’re up there with Dad Jokes. So having captured my attention from the get-go, I’m led into a pit of rebellious teens, kicking and screaming about, well, about what really? Good question…

Cerebral Ballzy are thrashing punk, straight outta NYC. Recently signed to Julian Casablanca’s Cult Records, their new album Jaded & Faded is out in June.

Sticking close to the traditional punk formula, with the residual grit intact, the songs are more party tunes than they are anti-establishment, sock-it-to-the-man types. They’re songs about being young, reckless and angry. Angry without a cause, the furious guy/gal’s Miley Cyrus.

Don’t let that discredit them for you though, they speak to ‘youth’ in the same way our darling Blink 182 did for us, but with a shit-tonne of Brooklyn grime dumped on top. Did pop-punk even happen? I think not.

There’s a fierce energy that emanates from tracks such as Don’t Tell Me What To Do and On The Run. I imagine they’re a band better seen live, if you’re not afraid of sweat, blood, beer, spit… or really, any form of liquid being splatted on your face.

They’ve been kicking the dirt since 2008, with a self-titled debut album (2011) and their follow up Jaded & Faded expected in June this year (2014), through Julian Casablanca’s label Cult Records. They’ve played some pretty rad support slots, having shared the stage with the likes of The Black Lips, Flag, The Horrors and Japanther.

Also garnering ferocious audiences through bile-inducing performances at festivals in the UK and US, such as Sonisphere, Lowlands, Pukkelpop, Reading & Leeds – also Summer Sonic in Japan.

They have a run of shows in the US, including a support slot for The Strokes and inclusion on Chicago’s, Riot Fest. I’ll be interested to see if their new album packs the same punch as its predecessor.
