CCTV footage reveals man who would rather risk dying in a burning bus than copping the wrong Opal fare

It was a complete panic when the back of a State Transit bus spontaneously caught fire while driving northbound across the Harbour Bridge during peak hour.

While commuters had their lives flashing before their eyes, one passenger had something more important on his mind.

One courageous commuter chose to risk death in a burning bus rather than appeal an incorrect Opal fair with the State Transit Authority.

Unfortunately, the risky act was probably all for nothing. As all Opal users know, you can only tap on and off when the bus arrives at a stop. While the bus is in transit between stops the Opal card reader is disengaged. So, while the passenger though he was doing the right thing, last time we checked there was no bus stop on the Harbour Bridge.

The incident happened in September last year but a report using CCTV footage has recently been released revealing the intrepid traveler. It didn’t cause any severe harm to those on the bus, although three people including the driver were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the fire was a mechanical issue.

“Preliminary investigations by OTSI found the fire started within the engine bay and was likely electrical in nature. It was fed by hydraulic oil reservoirs and diesel fuel lines.”

However, we’re still pointing our finger at Otto Mann.
