Vid O' the Week – Billy Fox

Billy Fox is a Sydney based music, writer and producer. I had never heard of him until today when I collided head-on with his track and video to Mystery. Whoa. It had me at 7 seconds.

He released his debut track Monuments late last year, and despite being on the other side of the planet, it caused quite a stir in the UK music blog scene. Appealing to those who are fans of stripped back writing with bundles of savvy production, Fox mixes together weird elements of folk, hip-hop, jazz and electronica. Inspired by love, life, Lennon, McCartney and Greek mythology, Billy Fox has created a sound that is really his own.

I must have a soft spot for grainy, nostalgic video bites mixed with modern sound production, a la previous Vid O’ the Weeks from Cull, Mining Boom and Danger Beach. Something about the vintage, almost forgotten aesthetic combined with the cleanness of sound really appeals to me, and Billy Fox’s Mystery is no exception.

Billy Fox is truly a man of Mystery. With two tracks under his belt, he’s already won us over. Fans of romance in space? Pay attention.

Using old footage taken from god knows where, a tale of sci-fi retro romance is told. Fans of SOHN or James Blake will go berserk for this track, and those who wet their pants over 60’s space babes (the send up of which Austin Powers’ fembots are famous for) will find their solace in the clip.

Mystery has been pulled from Billy Fox’s forthcoming mini album, the title of which eludes me. Keep in touch with his upcoming releases by following him on the Book of Faces. Other than that, he’s a pretty mysterious kinda guy.
