Radiating a unique 60’s surf-rock vibe, Melbourne trio Baby Blue are giving listeners a warm taste of nostalgia with their debut track Soccer Ball. Baby Blue came together when singer/ songwriter Rhea Caldwell abandoned performing solo and took guitarist Fabian Hunter up on his offer to combine forces. Things kicked off when the pair had a jam together and later began playing a handful of duo shows around Melbourne. Somewhere along the line Nat Riley offered to play drums, and Baby Blue was born.

Inspired by classic rock and roll, Caldwell began her love affair with music at the raw age of nine. “I love 60’s Rock and Roll, my first ever CD was a double disc Hits of The 60’s,” Caldwell explains. “It had songs on it like My Boyfriends Back by The Angels, The Beatles I Wanna Hold Your hand and Honky Tonk Women by the Rolling Stones. I begged my Dad to buy it for me instead of some other top of the pop stuff. It was all down hill from there really.”
Caldwell’s love for music has acted as her main creative influence, with a stretch of musical genres inspiring both her music and song writing. With each band member’s taste in music differing slightly from one another, the result is a distinctive sound that takes us back to another era.

“I have a lot of different influences. I listen to all sorts of music. My taste in music varies all the way from No Zu through to song writers like Darren Hanlon,” she explains. “Anything with an honest sound whether its whacky dance floor stuff to something that tugs on the heartstrings. It’s all in the song and the sound and vibe.”
Caldwell sums up their debut single Soccer Ball as, “A song about my dog stealing someone’s soccer ball at the park and them going crazy. The ball survived.” The new track screams 60’s surf-rock, painting the listener a visual of an old western film. With dreamy, sun-drenched guitar riffs to complement the harmonised vocals and reverb drumming, its hard not to mistake Soccer Ball as the soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino film.
Listeners can hear more from Baby Blue on February 27 at The Toff in Melbourne, where they will be playing alongside Coastbusters (also featuring guitarist Fabian Hunter) as part of a double single launch. Fans can expect to hear new music in a couple months time, followed by an EP launch tour in June. To get you by until then, keep an ear out for Baby Blue playing a string of support shows in March.
