Broken heart? Patch it back together with Anywhere, the new EP from Laura Attwood and the Tourists

Local to Sydney and proving they’re no tourists when it comes to creating quirky, honest tunes, Laura Attwood and The Tourists are putting their own spin on country music, with lyrics so beaming with so much emotion, you’ll need to whack on some SPF 50+.

The act is made up by frontwoman Laura Attwood (vocals, guitar), Adam van Eyk (vocals and lead guitar), Jackson Field (bass) and Chris Xirocostas (drums).

Humble storytellers Laura Attwood and the Tourists have unleashed a fresh new EP, Anywhere, driven by slow-moving melodies and emotive lyrics.

Influenced by the likes of Courtney Barnett, Fleet Foxes, Arctic Monkeys and Abba, the new record is a compilation of overtly honest vocals, shining metaphor and slow, summery grooves.

Originally performing as a solo act, Laura Attwood wrote the songs on Anywhere herself, a result of personal experiences, outpourings of emotion and love gone south.

Written after a gig supporting Gang Of Youths, Edmond Green is a happy and uplifting track, inspired by the expression of new love. Save Me touches on infatuation and insanity, a mental state Attwood experienced from being trapped in a love so toxic it affected her mental health. With the added synth from drummer Xirocostas, the song expresses a deep sadness and sense of relief.

Title track Anywhere is a clear stand out, inspired by Attwood’s first heartbreak. Previously a tom boy, Attwood reflects on being left by her boyfriend for someone who she envisioned as beautiful and feminine, leaving her feeling worthless and insecure. Yet the track has a country twang about it, making you feel warm and fuzzy as Attwood’s vocal washes over you like a gentle breeze.

There’s a timeless quality to Attwood’s voice that reminds me of a young Stevie Nicks, with warm guitars and a slow-moving beat that perfectly capture the beauty in her lyrics.

It’s fair to say Attwood is a small-time genius when it comes to songwriting, never ceasing to bore when voicing heartbreak, or being unlucky in love. With a definitive country vibe and warm, reflective melodies, the four piece seem to bounce off each other sonically, crafting a unique genre of alternative-country all of their own.
