A new mural in NYC is making sure nobody forgets the blatant sexism of powerful politicians

Bold artists have dedicated a huge mural to all the politicians who thought they got away with their shockingly sexist statements.

Artists Zoë Buckman and Natalie Frank have collected a few, out of the many, offensive quotes from Trump, Clinton and 35 other politicians, and collaged them onto a 30-foot long mural.

The artwork is titled We Hold These Truths To Be Self-Evident, and is now on view in the Ford Foundation Live Gallery at New York Live Arts.

2016 was a year packed full of nasty ideas and attitudes towards many different population groups. This meant that the majority of obscene remarks made by politicians got lost in the vast influx of increasingly shocking information.

Politicians got away with saying a lot more, because there was so much political drama to distract us.

Buckman and Frank have immortalised these wrongs, in an attempt to raise awareness of women’s oppression, and bring about positive change and equality.

This research-based mural project is about the cumulative effects of negativity, hate, and the abandonment of science…on women and girls.” Buckman says.

The arresting installation got its title from Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, delivered at the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls in 1848.

The derogatory quotes are plastered on top of an image depicting a conference of white men.

Here are some of the quotes on display – yes, things politicians actually said:

Some girls, they rape so easy”- Roger Rivard

Planed parenthood isn’t purely a ‘healthcare provider’ anymore than a heroin dealer is a community pharmacist”- Mike Huckabee

I would hope that when a woman goes in to a physician with a rape issue, that physician will indeed ask her…was this pregnancy caused by normal relations in a marriage of was it truly cased by rape?” – Chuck Winder
