Like me, if you’re seriously over these cold and grey winter days and on the hunt for some sunshine then luckily Melbourne indie pop rockers Sans have come to the rescue. Back with their sophomore EP Adolescence, the four-piece have set off a volcano of fast and loud synthy jams exploding with all the sunshine you need to shake off those winter blues.

High school mates Amanda Norman (vocals/synth) and Stacey Cicivelli (guitar/vocals) started out making tunes using shitty old guitars, synths and drums before upgrading to shitty old laptops and amps. Taking to the stage, they soon added Brendan Aked (bass) and Frank Morda (drums) to the mix and became purveyors of intense party anthems. Erupting into all sorts of frenzied guitar hooks and volatile drum beats, Sans know how to detonate a fun indie pop tune.
Recorded over a few days with Aaron Dobos at Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music in the USA (seeing a theme here), their sophomore EP is, fittingly, is all about the trials and tribulations of growing up, but kind of told through a pair of crazy retro pineapple-shaped glasses. Moving on just a little from their debut EP Sea Hearts’ starry-eyed sound, their latest five tracks are a bit more grown up, but still brimming with their infectious youthful sound.
Debut single and opener Torquay bursts into a feverish drum beat that sweeps you up and takes you along for the ride. An effervescent tune blasting out rays of sunshine at a manic pace, you can’t help but be devoured by this track. Plunging into synth pop soundscapes, Hurt You Now bubbles over with teenybopper hooks and harmonies before Port steers towards rockier waters.
An outpouring of viscous vocals ignites the short-fused drum beat and lets the sunshine free. Swaying into surf pop, Burning Up is a peachy tune gushing with nostalgia. With old-school prom night lyrics like, “I’m addicted to your spotlight” it’s smothered in honeyed harmonies but still packs a rollicking drum punch. Despite another surge of girly teenage crush lyrics, Halfbeat is layered in warm harmonies and bright synths, and is exactly what’s needed to see out the frosty season.
Carving out their own fast and fun indie pop sound that is overflowing with infectious energy, Sans’ latest EP is a volcanic eruption you can’t escape. Blasting out sunshine and nostalgia, it really does take you back to the good old days when you were young and carefree. Launching their sophomore EP at The Toff in Melbourne on 8 August alongside local bands Oliver’s Army and Brungas Band, get ready for some dynamte synth-soaked indie pop.
