Bedroom mixer turned brazen beatmaker, Sydney producer Chasm aka Chris Hamer-Smith is boldly going where no man has gone before. Fusing hip-hop with just about anything, his stockpile of funky beats, soulful samples and reggae artist collabs sees him push the boundaries album after album.

CHASM

Chris Hamer-Smith returns to his Chasm guise with his latest Lose My Mind. Not one to be stagnant, he’s switching things up with soul samples and vocals.

Somewhere around the dawn of the new millennium, Hamer-Smith decided to put down his guitar and explore beat making in his bedroom. Honing in on his mad skills, he mastered the art of sampling and decided the time was ripe to emerge from his lair as Chasm. Releasing his 2004 debut EP under his slick, new moniker, he dropped some far out beats and got himself a record deal.

Signing to Obese Records, he released debut album Beyond The Beat Tape and really stirred up the hip-hop scene. Jam packed with flamenco-flavoured beats, his debut LP was full of eclectic sampling. As a triple J feature album, his tracks with top-notch MCs like Urthboy and Ozi Batla clocked up some serious airtime and made sure everyone knew Chasm had arrived. Chasm also became one-third of ARIA nominated hip-hop/reggae group Astronomy Class as well as remixing for some of Aussie hip hop’s finest like Thundamentals. And, because he damn well can, he started slipping on his dance moniker Dr Don-Don for occasional funsies too.

Riling up hip-hop every which way he can, Chasm’s sophomore album Move saw him collaborate with Melbourne reggae songstress Vida Sunshyne, while his follow-up album This Is How We Never Die featured the likes of AG, Delta and Lazy Grey. Fusing beats with different reggae genres and different types of MCs and vocalists, he made hip hop sound fresh, funky and different from the rest.

Always keeping things interesting, his 2013 Chasm EP series pushed those boundaries just a little bit more. Releasing four back-to-back EPs featuring four different artists, he moved away from MCs and dense sampling and turned instead to smooth vocalists and summery synths. This made for his most simmered-down tracks yet like Unfinished Business, When I See You and Summer.

Now, bringing the Chasborg back to life, he’s just released a new single Lose My Mind in the lead up to his upcoming album. Ramping up the layers, Chasm’s latest sample heavy tune slackens the reins and takes us in a cruisier direction. Mellowing into some full-bodied, soulful vocals, the thick melody is soon sliced and diced by a tangle of loose vocal samples. Throw in some futuristic laser-like sounds and flighty flutes and you have yourself another Chasm tune that’s full of brazen beat making, and sure to be the first of many off his upcoming album.
