Kurt Cobain ponders band names in new clip from ‘Montage of Heck’

A new clip from the upcoming documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck has been released, which features the various names the frontman considered before settling on ‘Nirvana‘. Mostly animation, the clip (hosted on The Guardian) reveals the thoughts and drawings of Cobain’s diaries, and it also features archive footage of a very early Nirvana playing a gig.

Some of the band names Cobain toyed with included Boy in Heat, The Mandibles, Erectum, Godchild and Nagging Rash. In retrospect, Nirvana seems an inspired choice. The clip also shows a short list of Cobain’s favourite songs, which amongst others includes tracks by Alice Cooper, The Bangles, The Melvins, Skindiver, Black Boys and The Dead Boys.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, the first documentary to made with the cooperation with his family, will combine home movies and archive footage with digital multimedia, like animating Cobain’s numerous doodlings, to tell the story of the famous grunge star’s struggles with coping with his newfound and unwanted fame. The film will have a limited release in theatres Australia-wide starting Thursday May 7.
