Born in London, raised in Kenya and now Perth-based folktronica soul mastermind, Sid Pattni is more than a force to be reckoned with – he’s a creative genius. A genius that has just dropped the freshest single Love & Desire, featuring the strong and sexy vocals of singer Sophie Hopes from Perth post-modern Pixies band Tired Lion. His creativity spans outside the music world too, with a number of alleged still life fruit paintings (that are one hundred per cent ungooglable).

Love & Desire was not conceived in a vacuum. Sid has been kicking around for a long time, and in fact has arguably lived a double life. He graduated from WAAPA as a different Sid. Having had a huge rep as one heck of a drummer, until in 2009, when he suffered such bad injuries that would be detrimental to his health if he kept going. For want of a better metaphor, he got back on the horse, this time using piano as his creative outlet, which ultimately led him to producing music.
Back in 2012 he released debut EP Le Vide, which was unbelievably well conceived, earning chart status on Bandcamp. The EP featured Got To Learn Sometimes with remixing duties handed to the prolific progressive soul beat-maker Ta-Ku (by the way, if you’re not following this hilarious creative creature on Instagram, you’re missing out). This wet his pallet for collaboration and did so with none other than the radio talent Meg Mac on a trappy soul number called Go Back Home.
Released on the West Coast based Pilerats Records, Love & Desire starts out muggy and thumpy, transporting you to that one dark, moist club – what I’m trying to say is that it’s incredibly dancy. Sophie’s vocals quickly slice through with a spacey synth, offering cheeky lyrics like “Half the bottle, or maybe I’m half full” to make for a gratifying listen – one of those tracks you put on to get in the zone.
After building up layers of arpeggio-laden synths, Sid’s vocals creep into the chorus, creating a yin and yang of tone. The pair’s vocals “Too much love and desire, feel the rush for you” are full of chemistry, maybe even sexual tension. The tune is pushed with a fierce momentum that, at the end, leaves you satisfied yet at the same time wanting a whole lot more.
