Lisa Crawley premieres her elegant video for Stranger

For a moment there you’d believe you’ve walked into a scene from a Raymond Chandler novel. Crack P.I Phillip Marlowe is sitting in the corner of a smoky bar hunting down Velma, the cute little redhead with the generous legs. Her husband Moose Malloy was framed for robbery see? Now that his stitch is up he wants her back and to find the God damned truth. Even if that means Marlowe shooting first and asking questions later.

Wait a sec, this isn’t a Phillip Marlowe mystery. It’s the premiere for the new Lisa Crawley video Stranger.

Lisa Crawley

Every stranger has their story, and Lisa Crawley delves into that narrative with elegance, muted colours and gentle camera work in the clip for Stranger.

Lisa Crawley is a breathtaking lady who hails from Auckland, but now resides  in good old Melbourne town. To date she has released two albums and two EPs and has a vibe akin to Regina Spektor, but a leaning a little less on the quirky side and more towards sweet. She’s a prolific songwriter in her own right having been nominated for New Zealand’s prestigious Silver Scroll award and being awarded the Pacific Songwriting Award for Stranger. Rightfully so, the song is a gorgeously produced piece of music. It’s under three minutes but manages to achieve a lot in that limited space of time. The bass, drums and keys silently tip toe around the echoing horn and moving stings. Lisa’s voice rings out smoothly, the temper of her voice sitting nicely in the mix.

Lisa’s video for Stranger is a suited companion for the song. Its muted colours and gentle camera work work wonders in bringing the song to life. Directed by Clayton Jacobson Stranger  is set in an empty jazz bar, the notion of coming across different kinds of strangers in a place something anyone can relate to. A person may seem to be inconspicuous, but sometimes you just can’t help but wonder what secret life hides behind that person’s eyes.

The weathered proprietor, the disenfranchised young barkeep, the shaggy man and his elderly acquaintance, the beautiful young woman who seems at a loss before being summoned upstairs, the pensive band members themselves. We are given such small windows to glimpse into their lives and see who they are. Yet the most interesting thing about a stranger isn’t the mystery of their identity but the possibility. The video captures this very well, and you may well find yourself pondering the identities of these characters long after seeing the clip.

Lisa is currently touring Australia, so if you want to experience her elegant vocals in a more intimate setting be sure to check out the dates below.
