Kanye West shows a more subdued side to himself in an interview with DJ Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1, compared to 18 months ago.
When West spoke about his inspirations outside the realm of music, he talked about British professor of fashion design, Louise Wilson, who passed away last year.
“I went to Louise Wilson’s memorial, the greatest fashion instructor of all time. Louise Wilson was the baddest professor of all time of any fashion school ever, notorious for not letting people stop at a 7 or an 8, pushing people to a 12,” he said.
Kanye continues,“ The last time I saw her, we had dinner at Hakkasan which is my favourite restaurant in London, and I think that she knew she was going to pass and she just wanted to give some words of advice… she said so many students, they don’t give it their all and the problem is as soon as they do anything half way good, 2 years old, 3 years old, their parents clap. She just looked at me and said, ‘Kanye, Don’t clap'”.
The rapper then began crying. * “That’s never happened to me in an interview before,” he said when he composed himself.
It was back in 2013, following the release of the LP Yeezus, that West had a heated discussion with Lowe about his opinions on the glass ceiling for black artists in the music industry to his fustrations with the fashion industry.
In the latest interview, Lowe continued from where the two left off, with West responding to his earlier behaviour.
“I was just myself and I expressed myself and I was gonna go for it,” the rapper said.
