I’m gonna cut straight to the point; Groovin The Moo might just be the best festival to grace this great sunburnt land. Big Day Out is currently dead in the water, Stereosonic is flooded with roid munchers and Splendour in the Grass can only be appreciated by those who don’t have classes or jobs to attend. But Groovin, oh is it ever such a delight.
The stages are within close proximity to each other guaranteeing you’ll never suffer at the hands of timetable clashes, the food is ace and there are plenty of adorable cows wandering around in the nearby paddock. Yet the true draw for Groovin is the lineup. Year in and year out the folks behind the festival manage to book some of the most dynamic and exciting local acts around, not to mention killer international acts too.
Groovin the Moo have outdone themselves once again with another killer lineup. Don’t step in the cow pat as you rush over to the stages.
Tkay Maidza
No one should have to be convinced to see Tkay Maidza. The young Adelaide-ian rapper has been tearing up dance floors and festival crowds alike with her high octane, pulsing beats and unstoppable lyrical flow. And if her latest single M.O.B is anything to go by, you’ll be stomping around that festival field like a brontosaurus the second she starts spitting her rhymes.
Northlane
Hardcore and metal acts are often slighted by festivals. They are very niche genres, and unless it’s Soundwave too much screaming and double kicks may turn away some of the uninitiated. Thankfully Groovin always manages to show love to at least one heavy band, and they’ve done well to pick up Sydney five piece Northlane. The boys have been touted as one of the best young heavy bands in along time and the proof is in their riff-tastic pudding.
DMAs
The kings of Newtown are heading to a farm near you! The guys from DMAs have seen an incredible influx in their popularity having been championed by FBI and now triple J starting to show some love. Their understated take on alternative and pop music has certainly earned them their recent success, a fact that has seen the band picked up by Mom + Pop Records in the USA and Infectious Music in Europe.
RL Grime
The big electronic drawcard for this year’s Groovin is this man. He’ll be dropping some oh so dirty beats at the Moolin Rouge stage and that’s about all the argument we need to make.
Peaches
Speaking of dirty beats, you’d be silly not to catch a glimpse of Peaches. The Canadian performer is known for her ambitious and sometimes outrageous live shows. I’ll let this clip do the rest of the talking and you’ll get what I’m talking about.
The Dancing Accountant
He’s just a mild mannered accountant, but once he puts his trusty briefcase down he becomes an unstoppable dancing machine. The Dancing Accountant will be wandering around the paddock, so if you see a man in a neat sweater-vest suddenly breaking out some rad moves on a make shift dance floor why not join in? And maybe while you’re at it ask for some advice on your tax return.
One Day
The One Day crew have been killing it this last year. In case you’ve been living under a rock, or perhaps don’t appreciate some good old collaborations, One Day is the collective outfit of Jackie Onassis, Horrorshow, Joyride and Split Syndicate. They’re a god damn Aussie hip-hop dream team. Kind of like what Bliss n Eso tried that one time, but y’know, less shit.
Broods
New Zealand brother/ sister act Broods are bound to draw one of the biggest crowds at Groovin. As they’ll take the stage all the teenagers who have been there since morning have finally calmed down and realised crop tops and singlets were a bad idea, while all the older kids will have their beer jackets on comfortably. Cue the soothing, lush and gorgeous synth pop of Broods that can be admired from the easy inlince of Alcohol Hill, hopefully with sweet light show too.
The Delta Riggs
After all the dirty beats, hardcore breakdowns, hip hop rhythms and pirouetting accountants, what you need is a good time rock n’ roll band. Kingswood was that band last year, and this time round it is Gold Coast via Melbourne lads The Delta Riggs.
