With a sound that feels like a mix of Hudson Mohawke, Chet Faker and Flume, Happy is crushing on the new dynamic collaboration that is Chiefs & Nick Acquroff! The duo released their debut EP Inside Outside last week, which contains a really great mix of electro and soul whilst playing with the use of both repetitive chorus and texturing. The EP is eighteen minutes of musical experimentation that really pays off to create a great listening experience.
Ice cream and pancakes. Cigarettes and sex. Chiefs and Nick Acquroff. There are some things that are just meant to be together.
Chiefs is a Melbourne based artist that has really established himself in the music world. His tracks have been showcased on Triple J and received really positive reviews. He has collaborated with a great deal of artists globally. This year he worked with Australian musician Owen Rabbit on the track It’s All Gone, which was released last month. He has also worked with the LA’s CRNKN (whose tracks have been reworked by Knife Party) on their track Glow. Needless to say Chiefs is full of diverse collaboration experience that shows in his latest collaboration with Nick Acquroff.
Nick Acquroff’s previous experience comes from his work with the four-piece, Sons et al that have a style of electronic-acoustic-mix. The quad formed in 2012 and since then has been filling the music world and listeners of Triple J and Triple J Digital Radio with their unique-genre-fused vibes! They have headlined tours at venues like The Beresford, Oxford Arts Factory and The Toff. With Nick’s experience from this musical enterprise it is no wonder that collaborating with Chief has come together to create a successful and great sounding EP.
It isn’t the first time these two Melbourne artists have come together to create some sweet sounds. This time last year they released the track Stay. This track whilst not only introduced the new collaboration to the world but also provided a taste of what was to come for their future EP. Out of the entire EP, Stay has the greatest Chet Faker Built on Glass vibe. With the smooth distinctive vocals mixed with repetitive lyrics and full, long electro sounds. This track needed to have a real weight to it as to establish this new collaboration and Stay has definitely achieved that.
Inside Out is the track that reflects the naming of the EP and if you need anything to identify Chief & Nick Acquroff, this song is exactly that. It really showcases the sounds of these two together. The crescendo fits perfectly with the blast of electro and you can’t help but be swept up in the beat. This track is also the best reflection of their use of texture within the EP. The pyramid-track is a filled with a layer of beats, then added with the tier of electronics to be finished with a summit of velvety vocals.
Whilst Nick Acquroff isn’t touring yet as a solo or with Sons et al, Chiefs is! Currently touring for his I Could Be Gone national tour has seen him travel all over the country. The tour started in Brisbane in November and will finish in Bendigo, Victoria on December 19th. However I’m keeping an eye out for when (and hopefully they do!) Chief and Nick tour together for the EP-tickets shall be bought!
