I was about to start this article off with the generic “We last shared the awesome sounds of Tully On Tully back in…” etc when it struck me that we haven’t officially covered this quintet outta Melbourne! Better late than never though, I guess.
Here’s a band for you Game of Thrones dorks – Tully On Tully. They’ve kindly shot us their latest single Two Birds (don’t they know their sigil is the fish?).
Ahead of their appearance at Bigsound 2014, the five piece have shot us their latest single Two Birds – a shuffly, textural romp through a variety of pop soundscapes. Borrowing as much from the stadium indie sounds of guys like The Arcade Fire as they do from the powerful, shoulderpadded female pop/rock icons of the 80’s, Tully On Tully have certainly carved out a niche the size of canyon within which to exist.
While it’s certainly a voice that slaps you in the face, Tully ÷ Tully have a refreshing power behind their music – like stepping out of the rain into a shower that’s not only scaldingly hot, but with enough pressure to peel the paint off the bathroom walls as well.
While it’s probably not an element missing from the kinds of big pop music the kids are listening to these days (I say probably because I haven’t listened to FM radio pop since I quit my job slicing meat 2 years ago), it’s something that’s missing from the kind of miserable music I have on my regular rotation. While it’s not exactly cheering me up, it’s just making me feel… something.
