Single Premiere: Meredith – Jumpin Beds

A lot can happen in four months. It’s only been that long since we last heard from Brizzy songstress Meredith*, dropping a track and video for her debut Darkness, which sought praise from fans of Julia Stone, Laura Marling and the wealth of acoustic singer songwriters that this nation has produced. Not wholly ditching the vibe, but certainly throwing us a curveball, Meredith seems to have traded in her wooden six string for an MPC (or at the very least a lappy with Ableton) on her new single Jumpin Beds.

No, not the ridiculous Victorian festival that makes you enter a random draw just to buy a ticket, we’re talking about Brisbane’s Meredith, your next favourite singer.

And boy oh boy does it sound excellent. With a voice as mature and sweet as hers, the transition to more contemporary pop instrumentation might seem like an easy one, but it’s struck me how much more potential her pipes have when her music is detached from the everyday folksy tropes.

That said, the song Jumpin Beds won’t have you jumping on any beds. It’s sombre and personal, Mezza’s simple refrains switching seamlessly through the whole range of reflective mumbling, heavenly refrains and softly percussive verses. It’s not a voice that forces it’s way into your ears, commanding me to pay attention to her lyricism – I find myself doing so of my own volition. For an instrumental post-rock fan (read: beret wearing douchebag) such as myself, that’s quite some feat.

Having completed a string of performances throughout July with Mirages and Benjalu, Brisbanites should feel assured that you’ll be able to catch the up-close-and-personal Meredith experience sooner rather than later.
