Trixie? T-R-X-Y-E? Trix-yay? (Pronounced like Kanye, possibly?) Who knows. What we do know though, is that South African-born Perth boy, Troye Sivan, is doing really well for himself as his debut EP, TRXYE, has already been topping the charts around the world, despite only being released on August 15th, and despite having a title that no one really knows how to pronounce.
Making waves among music industry and Tumblrista fangirls alike, here’s what we’re making of TRXYE.
On a recent radio airing, Troye announced that his first single off the EP, Happy Little Pill, had hit number 1 in 55 countries (making me feel like an idiot for suggesting to write an article on someone I believed to be a relatively unknown artist).
I, personally discovered him a while ago through his YouTube channel (where he has established a popular online presence with over 2.5 million subscribers), and I did not anticipate this kind of success that has clearly reached beyond his viewers.
Online, he comes across as a wonderfully dorky, average 19-year old who makes fun, silly vlogs in his bedroom, and now he’s quickly become an international artist with a surprisingly mature and authentic sound.
The fusion of genres used in this EP highlight an eclectic mix of influences that truly compliment each other beautifully. We are taken on a ride from start to finish with rhythmic beats and atmospheric tones in Happy Little Pill, to an electrifying dubstep chorus in Touch, to foot-stomping crowd chants in Fun, to an R&B feel in his track about heartbreak, Gasoline, and lastly ending with a soft, emotional ballad in The Fault In Our Stars (MMXIV).
