Nerdy IT guys doing pop? That’s what I thought when I first googled The Solicitors, but of course, its best not to judge a band by its band photos. Strangers at first, one from Calafornia who played the guitar and the other from London met in Melbourne in 2012 to form an entourage of new-wave pop and the rest is history.
Like Weezer, The Solicitors’ fashion sense is a little whack. Also like Weezer, they make no nonsense guitar pop. Basically, these guys are a lot like Weezer.
Introducing: Lee Jones who does vocals and guitar, James Manning on bass and vocals with Laf Zuccarello on guitar and Matt Stirling on drums. The Solicitors are, in one word, fun. Their songs are catchy and coupled with undertones of British pop, old school rock-n-roll vibes, and savvy riffs, a little like a 2014 Weezer. They were singed by Popboomerang Records at a pretty early stage in their music career having not even played their first gig.
Recently, the Melbourne new-wave outfit started climbing on the Triple J Unearthed overall weekly charts following the release of their latest single, If You Let Me Hold You. The band have suggested that their listeners should harness their inner music critic and review the track on Triple J Unearthed – our favourite so far has been ‘if you don’t keep an eye and ear out for these fellas then you are a dropkick‘.
The band have poetically described themselves as Melbourne based mongrels and purveyors of fast paced, laconic New Wave pop. With Lee’s unique songwriting combining bitter lyrics and sweet melodies matched with a high energy and frantic band itching to be on the move, The Solicitors are set to release a debut album in late 2014. It has been said of the band’s live show “The perfect bit of teenage energy and adult (lyrical) sharpness under a tight suit. Make room for this, its fun”. These guys are playing all over Melbourne and it’s a shame they didn’t play on the occasional tram too. You hear that Tram Sessions?
