Introducing Dictaphone Blues

Well aren’t these New Zealanders just taking over the world.

It’s psychedelic pop, somewhere in the feel good realm of ELO classics, think Mr. Blue Sky or Strange Magic with slightly more modern vibes and you will find yourselves round about in the right genre for Dictaphone Blues, with a little of the crooning lyricism of Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner, how can you go past a combo like that?!

Dictaphone Blues

New Zealand delivers more great tunes with power pop psych trio, Dictaphone Blues. It’s only taken two albums and a single before we did a write- up on them so enjoy!

Starting as a solo, bedroom project for Auckland native Edward Castelow in 2006, Dictaphone Blues have evolved into a trio with live band that have produced two albums to date and toured around New Zealand and Australia.

Their debut album On the Down and In was released in April 2009 through Universal and well and truly established their sound, with plenty of New Zealand radio exposure for singles Spooky Room and Taken Aback. They also received a whole lot of positive feedback after their first tour around New Zealand, touring with the likes of Okkervil River, The New Pornographers, Liam Finn, Lawrence Arabia and Pains of Being Pure at Heart.

Their second album Beneath the Crystal Palace was released in April 2012. The band personally describing their sound for this album as: ‘a psychedelic pop dreamscape with tales of friendship, heartache, technological Armageddon and inner peace’.

Their latest release, Her Heart Breaks Like a Wave, is a beautifully composed ‘surfer break up song’, as catchy as it is laid back. Their video clips, including You Put It In Me, keep their indie pop image perfectly, set in some super imposed snowy landscape with magnificently layered camera work and queue galaxy shots and starry skies for the shot transition.

‘I guess I’m saying, you make me feel 16, without a care in the world, you got an ace up your sleeve’… right there with you Edward Castelow, you do the same for me.
