Video Premiere: Leura – Shallows

When I tried to explain to my boss that we were doing an exclusive video premiere for Leura in Monday’s zine, I realised that I had no idea how to say Leura – I’d only ever read the name. I said loourah, then I tried leeyoorah then leeurah then went back to loourah.

It was only after I looked back at the page that I realised the true nature of my dilemma – that pesky umlaut! I’d been saying Leura instead of Lëura! How awfully silly of me.

Leura‘s video for Shallows is the artistic icing on the intense vocal cake that is the aura of the Sydney artist.

Lingusitics aside, the angel voiced, lavender haired vocalist has shot us her latest video to premiere! It’s for Shallows, her ambient heartbreak folk prog opus from her upcoming EP. Okay, so it sounds more like piano rock to me, but I have a soft spot for self invented genres that combine 3 or more existing genre buzzwords.

There’s no doubting that she’s an incredibly talented musician, being likened to Daughter, London Grammar and Björk (with whom she shares an umlaut), this artsy visual rendition of her heart wrenching music is the icing on the proverbial cake.

Leura plays a devilish, lizardlike being, wrapped in a black cloak and covered in facial sequins who corrupts a flaxen topped maiden covered in flour. In terms of non-human actors, there’s one of those creepy roman numeral clocks, a little bit of thick, dripping blood and one of those weird sun face things that I used to have on my bedsheets as a kid. I love that sun face guy.

Leura’s debut self titled release should be coming out later this year, so keep your eyes peeled and subscribe to her socials via the links below!
