Lowtide – Held

If Blue Movie was Lowtide‘s Life Aquatic then their latest single Held might just be their Darjeeling Limited. It’s shorter, makes more sense, has a happy ending and doesn’t lean too heavily on the crutch of Bill Murray. Here, we interpret Bill Murray to mean a cliche of the genre – to a gazy, noisy, dreamy band like Lowtide, their Bill Murray is washy vocals and enough reverb to appease any stoner sound engineer.

lowtide band

Lowtide single número dos. Held is the shortest single on the band’s upcoming debut album, and perhaps the shortest they will ever release.

And while Held‘s vocals are a little washy and the guitar at some points sound more like whale song or a humming flying saucer than any terrestrial stringed instrument, the song clings to a distinctly pop aesthetic. The song presents boy girl vocals in a much more interesting context, the bassline seems to pop straight out of the Doolittle sleeve that it’s cased in and… is that an offbeat drum fill at 1:46?

Described as ‘the shortest song we will possibly ever write’, the song clocks in at a very radio friendly three short minutes – this is single material if we’ve ever heard it.

If you’re still reading at this point, you clearly weren’t put off by the sheer wankery of comparing two shoegaze songs to Wes Anderson films, and I respect that. It takes a dedicated type of hipster to read something this pretentious and not become violently ill at the very concept, unless of course you’re now just reading ironically. It’s probably about time that you hit play on that little soundcloud link down below don’t you think?

Lowtide will be embarking on an album launch tour on the 25th of July down at The Tote in Melbourne, followed by dates all the way up the east coast (details below). The full album will be available from next Wednesday (18th July) – you can preorder a vinyl copy of the debut self titled album from their bandcamp.
