Seemingly shrouded in mystery are Richmond (USA) band, Avers. I’ve had to search the bounds of the Internet to salvage what little information exists about this band.Their air of secrecy building my intrigue as I hunted – perhaps that is the digital strategy they willfully employed, because when I finally uncovered them, I was pretty pleased I did.
Avers are a psychedelic supergroup from Richmond, Virginia whose music will take you on a ride to the other side of the explosive, candy-popping rainbow.
Avers are born out of a number of bands, those of which have garnered them their notoriety within their local Richmond scene. Featuring respective members from folk bands The Head and the Heart, The Trillions, Mason Brothers and Hypercolour. They have moved away from their roots and into the rainbow world of wistful psychadelia.
Together they create some sweetly fatigued and dreamy sounds, making this shoegazey pop sound just like a surrealist dream. There’s a tonne of reverb, paired with sweet, droney choruses. Not too dissimilar in sound to buzz bands Temples and Tame Impala.
They’re seemingly a must see live act, upon checking out some of their recorded gigs, there appears to be the sort of energy that can only be experienced in a live capacity. They seem much more lively IRL than on record.
Outwardly a newly established band, Avers seem to be more than a mere side-project of their former bands. They have recently released their debut album Empty Light and have been announced as an addition to the Hopscotch Festival in North Carolina, USA.
This looks to be a pretty awesome festival with the likes of St Vincent, Jamie XX and The War on Drugs performing, along with a large host of established artists and up-and-comers. I predict that only good will come from their appearance at the festival in September, with the buzz already surrounding them in local blog circles.
