Spookyland – The Silly Fucking Thing

If you’ve been listening to FBi recently, you’ve probably heard a familiar little ditty by local singer songwriter Spookyland. Recently tweaked and reworked from it’s original demo form, the single The Silly Fucking Thing is making the rounds on the airwaves again ahead of his EP release through Monday Records and we’re pretty keen on the whole affair.

Not only was Silly Fucking Thing a damn fine track to start with, the rework from producer Tony Buchen (Preatures, Loon Lake, Bob Evans) gives the track some incredible instrumentals, setting Spookyland up for a release with depth, emotion and general radness – something .

spookyland

Despite his name, Spookyland’s single requires no spook warning – just in case you were browsing late at night, in the dark, all alone…

Silly Fucking Thing has the grandeur of any great album closing song – think Sons and Daughters, John Allyn Smith Sails, Only In Dreams, A Day In The Life, Purple Rain – beautiful simplicity, yet this simplicity is used in a wholly overstated manner.

The track sprawls, reaches, yearns towards a singular, hive minded goal, building up emotional and lyrical tension, which in a moment is effortlessly released through a speaker blowing chorus. Unidentifiable synthesised undercurrents, heavenly, fuzzed out tremolo picking and a drum roll introduction of Phil Collins proportions – this song has everything you could ever want in an epic closing song.

The song is refreshingly indulgent in things other than the self, the new Spookyland (or Spookyband, perhaps) abandoning much of the wankery the sixties might have conditioned us to expect when we hear the words singer and songwriter in the same sentence.

You can still compare Spookyland to Neil Young or Bob Dylan if you like, but I’m holding out for this four man incarnation of the artist revealing Marcus growing into a more mature, less pretentious performer. Oh, and the lyrics are probably pretty cool too – if you’re into that kind of thing.

Despite how explosive the track it, The Silly Fucking Thing is slated in as second last on the four track Rock and Roll Weakling EP according to the pre-order page on his label’s site. What epic, godlike breakdown might the proper album closing track hold? Stay tuned here (and probably on FBi) for upcoming EP details and tour information.
