I Know Leopard

I know leopard.

Wait, what? You know leopard?

I Know Leopard. It’s not a new language or an up and coming pop star but SURPRISE SURPRISE a five-piece indie pop band from Sydney. Their name derives from a comical situation involving a fancy dress store, a Chewbacca mask and an Indian store clerk who adamantly declared that he knew leopard, giving birth to the band that we know today. Actually, we know that cos we interviewed them a while back.

The delightful dream-pop outfit make feel-good, 70s inspired melodies that are Australia’s answer to the indie club populated by the Local Natives, Beach House, Grizzly Bear strain. But what sets I Know Leopard apart is their innovative take on the indie pop genre, combining gorgeous production, soaring vocals and light, hazy vibes to create a sound that is unique and endlessly dreamy.

i know leopard bandI Know Leopard have shifted things around a bit, starting with their sound. Daisy Eyes is much more Britpop-y than what we’ve been hearing, but we’re feeling it.

If you haven’t heard She and Hold This Tight yet, get on it now because these tracks are bound to top your most played tracks within moments. Illumina’s first single, She is a dream-pop wave of sonic languor which conveys a lush, woozy depthlessness. Hold This Tight typifies a similar super mellow, hazy brand of indie pop, but mixes things up with a dose of liveliness with up-tempo riffs and percussion.

Released earlier this month, Daisy Eyes is the latest single from the long-anticipated Illumina EP. A subtle departure from earlier singles She and Hold This Tight, Daisy Eyes incorporates Brit-pop influences, with layers of O’Loughlin’s floating vocals and stronger guitar riffs resulting in a sharper indie pop sensibility. Creating a lovely blend of indie Brit-pop and understated surf pop, I Know Leopard’s musical versatility is astounding.

The echoing vocals, the sheer walls of instrumentation, the dream pop textures that drift infinitely into the clouds are sounds I definitely won’t get tired of hearing. The slow burning, celestial soundscapes that I Know Leopard have become adept at creating have me eagerly awaiting the upcoming Illumina EP which drops May 16 (not long to go!)
