Sydney calls it lo-fi. Melbourne calls it Dolewave. Brisbane calls it Go-Betweens-core. You’ve heard about it here, you’ve heard about it there, and it’s pretty much what’s up in Australia’s non-electronic music scene. We’re not sure what it’s called in Adelaide, but we know it’s a much more dejected, Keating era pub-rock sound than the open chords of Fortitude Valley, the 12th fret fiddlings of Fitzroy or the broken-amp crackle of Annandale. Enter Old Mate.
Adelaide’s answer to Dolewave Lo-Fi Go-Betweens-core OLD MATE are hitting up Sunday School this weekend – Melbourne’s #1 Saturday night recovery gig.
Alongside Adelaide faves Bad//Dreems, Peak Twins and Bitch Prefect, Old Mate are bringing the sounds of Australia’s badlands to the nation. It’s the logical conclusion of the slacker pop explosion a few years back, where it became super cool not only to not look like you were trying but also to actually not try when writing music. While slacker-surf and slacker-indie has survived in the eastern states, perhaps due to a larger market of younger audiences, Adelaide’s scene has infused the sound with a far removed Howard-era dissatisfied emotion. They also have bloody amazing names.
Woah woah woah, this is supposed to be a gig guide, not a dissertation on the culture of Dolewave! Let’s get down to brass tax then: This Sunday (6th April), catch Old Mate hit up Sunday School – a set of free afternoon sessions at The Public Bar in Melbourne. They kick off at about 4pm and will feature Gold Class (members of Nth Wheel & Bone), Velcro and Black Vacation. Cheap ass drinks and cool ass bands – I’m sold! Or, y’know, I would be sold if I lived in Melbourne. Dang.
