Hockey Dad jumped in late last year and gave us one of the best tracks of the 2013/14 summer period. Now with the rains rolling in, our cardigans coming out from retirement and those enforced school zone speed limits, the Wollongong duo show us their single Lull City is still just as listenable in the more miserable seasons. Tonight and tomorrow (28th & 29th March), catch Hockey Dad at Yours And Owls down south and up here at the Oxford Art Factory respectively.
Late last year, we described Lull City as three minutes of barre chord insanity, with rolling drums that seem to be over all too soon. This weekend, fans of anything vaguely surf/punk/90’s that has come out in the last four years shouldn’t miss the opportunity to catch the band’s effortless energy. The Wollongong show on the 28th is part of the last stretch of the epic PALMARAMA tour with Palms and Gooch Palms, the lowdown of which you can check out here. Up here in Sydney, they’ll be playing alongside Melbourne four piece The Infants, whose off-kilter tunes range from Pixies on dramamine to melodic head boppers, perfectly tuned to our generation’s commercialised quirkiness. In short, they sound like a band from Melbourne – well constructed, intelligent songwriting, yet somewhat serious, making for a happily contrasting double header. PALMARAMA is $10 at Yours and Owls, while Saturday’s show is in the gallery bar of the OAF, free of charge. Bands kick off at 8:00pm, well before the dregs of the Oxford Street partygoers roll in to dance to the same ironic 00’s hip hop mix every night. Beers are around the $6.50 mark for local brews, but sometimes the bar has specials on weird Mexican beers – ask the staff or keep your eyes peeled for a specials board.
