Brooding emotive baritone vocals paired with beautifully articulated string instruments and piano – somehow Jack Colwell (with assistance from his band: The Owls) has found my ultimate weakness. Sydney resident and graduate of the Conservatorium of Music is Jack Colwell, bringing to you his brand of orchestral pop.
After listening to his tracks, it was not at all surprising to read that Colwell comes from a classically trained background. The music production is perfection; it is evident that each piece has been composed with a high level of care and emotion, some sounding quite theatrical in their boldness and delivery. A particularly standout of mine is Don’t Cry Those Tears – The composition of strings and horn sections on this track gives the song a real orchestral feel, yet it still feels modern. I think it also helps that I am a sucker for a baritone voice such as his. There is a great deal of variety between tracks too, some featuring heavily on piano and organ, whereas others focus mostly on strings and brass instruments.
Things are happening for Jack Colwell – last week saw his video clip for Far From View featured as rage’s indie clip of the week. He has also been announced as a support slot for Ella Hooper’s Melbourne and Sydney March tour dates. I’m excited to see what other things are to come for Jack Colwell in the near future, but, in the meantime, I will keep listening to his pretty, pretty music.
