Dead Owls @ The Astor Theatre

Friday the 31st of January 2014 marks a new page in the Happy history books – we’re finally hyping up a gig in Perth! Tomorrow night (Sat 1st Feb), the Astor Theatre will play host to a 5 band lineup featuring post-bubblegrunge duo Dead Owls, Lo-Fi three piece Doctopus, math-rockers Race To Your Face and much more.

Dead Owls originated in the garage scene in Melbourne, relocating to WA in 2011 to escape the overwhelmingly similar sounds of the packed bars of Fitzroy and Footscray. Citing influences like No Age, Bright Eyes and Dinosaur Jr., the band produce hectic, noisy tunes which showcase the versatility of songwriting that emerges when limited to but two members. Doctopus reserve a similar vibe of scuzzy, lo-fi wailing which reminds me for some reason of dusty blue milk-crates. Something about it (other than the milk crate on the cover) is just milk-cratey. Give Buddies a listen and tell me you don’t think the same thing.

Perth superbabes Dianas fill out the bottom half of the bill, making simple surf tunes with ghostly overlapping vocal melodies that feel a little like Warpaint with more skateboarding injuries. But I reckon the real highlight of the night will be the eccentric algebraics of Race To Your Face. With the post-rock bubble well and truly burst, it’s so so so nice to hear that it’s still alive and calculating on the other side of the desert. If you’re not familiar with post-rock, their EP this be might just blow your mind. Somewhere in my internet travels I read that Explosions In The Sky embodied a new era of Texan music, encompassing the textures and landscapes of the US desert – Race To Your Face embody a similar vibe, thoroughly based in old rock and roll traditions of the four piece guitar band, yet played in a mind explodingly intense fashion. Just don’t ask why they don’t have a vocalist.*

This show marks the start of an indefinite hiatus for Dead Owls, so catch them while you can. Tix will be $15 on the door (no presales) and doors open at 8:00pm.
