It’s quite unusual to come across a band that has blown up as quickly as this Sydney five piece have but it seems like everyone is swooning over our beloved quintet, The Preatures. These guys are the talk of the town after the release of their EP Is This How You Feel, and the buzz surrounding their accompanying national tour this September is growing crazier by the week. When a band hints to a full-length album and doesn’t deliver, you’d expect some understandable disappointment from fans. However, with this perfectly polished EP, The Preatures are attracting nothing but praise. When one of your singles is quickly picked up and remixed by iconic LA duo Classixxx, you know you must be doing something special.
Only a year ago they released their debut EP Shaking Hands, after jetting off to an LA Studio to record with renowned producer Tony Buchen (Old Man River, Tim Finn). This time around, they took an approach much closer to home. The group chose to record in a DIY space they nicknamed ‘Doldrums’ in the iconic Surry Hills commune Hibernian House. Lead guitarist Jack Moffitt bravely took the reigns of producing and engineering the entire EP. In all sense of the word, The Preatures have produced a record that is purely their own collaborative creation and their relaxed, unique vibe shines through on the record. Sonically, they channel a 70’s garage pop rock sound that is amplified through the shared vocals of Isabella Manfredi and Gideon Bensen. It isn’t surprising to hear the influence of Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie and The Pretenders. Their songs make you wanna dance!
The challenge of an album is still something they will have to tackle in the coming year. With two completely opposing EP productions under their belt, it will be interesting to see the path they travel down for their debut LP. Jack Moffitt is set to step back from his production role, choosing to focus entirely on his title as the band’s charismatic lead guitarist. Despite their almost sold out national tour and the successful release of This Is How You Feel, the band admit that they’re still struggling to hone in on their own, unique signature style. All it takes it one listen of the EP from beginning to end to realise that when they do, The Preatures will be unstoppable.
In true rock star style, The Preatures are not concerned about causing a little bit of a ruckus on the scene. When frontwoman Isabella Manfredi won the prestigious prize of the Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition earlier this year, she didn’t hesitate to don a politically motivated anti-Abbott t-shirt, playing on his “sex appeal” gaff, which the media was quick to censor. Go, girl! We love a feisty female lead!
